Active listening is one of those skills that can make or break professional relationships. I didn’t fully appreciate its importance until I found myself on the wrong side of a conversation early in my career.

Picture this: I was fresh into a new role, and during a team meeting, I was so focused on how I was going to respond that I completely missed a key point someone was making. When it came time for me to speak, I realised I hadn’t fully understood the issue at hand. I ended up fumbling through my response, and it was obvious to everyone in the room that I hadn’t been listening properly. That moment was a wake-up call for me. I realised that listening wasn’t just about hearing the words, but about understanding the message.

Since then, I’ve made a conscious effort to develop my active listening skills—whether it’s maintaining eye contact, giving my full attention to the speaker, or asking clarifying questions. Active listening is more than a technique; it’s a mindset that shows respect for the speaker and helps you avoid costly miscommunications.

In the workplace, especially as projects and teams grow more complex, effective listening is crucial. Misunderstandings can lead to mistakes, wasted time, and strained relationships. Active listening helps build trust, resolve conflicts, and ensure clarity, making it a critical skill for anyone looking to lead or collaborate effectively.
