Reach for t’Sky

Season 1, Episode 5: Argh, Too Many Choices!?!

Now that we understand the importance of active learning, the next challenge is often deciding what to learn. This dilemma is particularly common when starting a new career, transitioning into a new role, or after a promotion. We arrive with our existing skills and experience, eager to improve and progress, but with so many options, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin.

When I first started my career, I was a true computer nerd with absolutely no social skills. I was proficient in all things technical, but when it came to communication, I didn’t know where to begin. I quickly realised that if I wanted to move forward in my career, I had to prioritise improving my communication skills. This meant diving into task management, honing my active listening abilities, and working tirelessly on my written and presentation skills. It wasn’t easy, but it was essential for my growth.

One of the most important lessons I learned during this time was the value of seeking guidance. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to start, speak to your boss or a mentor. They can offer valuable advice on which skills to focus on first, helping you to build a solid foundation for your personal and professional development.

It’s easy to get caught up in trying to learn everything at once, but the key is to be strategic. Start by assessing your current strengths and weaknesses, and then prioritise the skills that will have the most significant impact on your ability to succeed in your current role and beyond. This approach will help you build a solid foundation that supports continuous growth.

As you invest in your development, remember that a well-thought-out plan is essential. Build a roadmap to the future, one that guides your learning journey and ensures that each step you take is purposeful and aligned with your long-term goals.
